Brookgreen Gardens

I am amazed how few native South Carolina residents have never visited this must see destination. With a collection approaching 1,500 works by American sculptors, the Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington Sculpture Gardens is one of the most extensive sculpture collections in North America.

We visited Brookgreen gardens Easter of 2013, during an exceptionally cool spring. We were impressed with the tulips, and spring flowers even though our guide said that gardens were “behind” due to the cool weather. It didn’t take long to realize that we would come back frequently to see the changing colors in the gardens.

Established in 1931, Brookgreen offers its outstanding sculpture collection, exceptional gardens, a native animal zoo, and pontoon boat tours all on a 9,100-acre property. Of course I enjoyed the shade of the three hundred year old oak trees planted when the property consisted of four rice plantations. I appreciate mature landscaping, especially when it helps beat the heat.Brookgreen Gardens
