Colonial Maritime Weekend - HMS Bounty

The HMS Bounty was docked at the Charleston Maritime Center for Colonial Maritime Weekend so following the Gentleman Pirate Lecture at the Powder Magazine, walked over see tall ship.

The wooden ship was built in 1962 for the movie Mutiny on the Bounty” with Marlon Brando. Ok, I haven’t seen the movie, but I have seen Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest with  Johnny Depp as Captian Sparrow and the HMS Bounty in the role of the Edinburgh Trader. Now I can say I’ve been on a tall ship featured in a Johnny Depp Movie and I’ve ridden in a carriage pulled by a horse that in another of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga. In addition to the crew that actually sails the Bounty, the Charles Towne Few Pirate Crew was aboard in full pirate dress. Some salty looking characters I must say.

What happened to the original Bounty? Following the famous 1790 mutiny, it was burned and sank near a rocky point off Pitcairn Island. Given that island's population consists of the desendants of the mutiany, every year Pitcairn islanders build a cardboard Bounty and set it on fire to commemorate the mutiny. Our only connection to the Pitcarin island? Clinton has ordered Pitcarin honey from the island, a truly unique tropical tasting treat that he was very stingy with. In addtion to honey, the island is known for beautiful postal stamps and novelty coins.
