Fort Moultrie

Located on Sullivan's Island, Fort Moultrie entry into the history books when it was attached on June 28th , 1776 by British warships.  The original fort was destroyed by time and a hurricane but new brick fort was built in 1809.  The National Park System site has a complete history,  but the fort’s role in the start of the Civil war is next event in its history that interests me.  The Federal Garrison that occupied the fort when South Carolina succeeded from the Union decided that the fort was indefensible if your enemy was going to come by land.  I overhear a tour guide in Charleston say that before abandoning the fort for Fort Sumter, they plugged up the canons, and burned what they could so the fort would be useless to the Confederacy.
I recommend visiting the fort on a warm clear day when you can look across the water.  If you are going to visit the island I’d suggest leaving your dogs at home.

The Town of Sullivan’s Island web site make its dog rules clear:

"All dogs visiting the Island MUST have a dog permit.  You may obtain a permit from Town  Hall, 1610 Middle Street.  Call (843) 883-3198"
