The Aiken-Rhett House

This is my favorite historic home tour in the Charleston area. Like Drayton Hall, the Aiken-Rhett House is not restored, but preserved. Currently instead of restoring the house to a point in history, it is cared for in a manner that allows visitors see remnants the history of the house and its outbuildings as it passed from generation to generation. The exterior has been restored, and there are restoration plans depending on funding.

Visitors are given MP3 players that offer a self paced tour, it was nice to be able to pause the tour to take extra time to look at things that interested me.  A mix of candle, gas and electric light fixtures illustrates the evolution of the house, just as decayed sofas illustrate its decline.

The estate was an urban farm, with an walled yard in back that housed livestock. Out buildings include slave quarters, stables/carriage house, the remains of a cow barn and two privies.
