Edmondston-Alston House

Built in 1825 by Charles Edmondston,  a Scottish shipping merchant, the Edmonston-Alston House is reflection Charleston’s pre-civil war wealth.  In 1837, wealthy rice planter Charles Alston, bought the home and updated it reflect a Greek Revival style. By this point, I’ve seen a lot of historic homes, and they can all start to run together, I will remember this house by its hundreds of carved balls and dozens of carved acorns (acorns bring luck) that decorate woodwork.

Talk about touching history, I’ve stood on the same piazza where  General P. T. Beauregard watched the bombardment of Ft. Sumter that began the Civil war on April 12, 1861. The day we visited, there were only sail boats in the harbor.

Alston family furnishings include furniture, silver, an extensive library, and a an amazing collection of art acquired on a traditional Grand Tour of Europe.
