Preservation is the key word of Drayton Hall. I am drawn to Drayton Hall because the National Trust for Historic Preservation elected to let it speak for its self by preserving it instead of dressing it. Drayton Hall is not a house full of furniture and tapestry, but study in structure and a tribute to painstaking efforts to maintain the past.
If you are interested in architecture – Constructed in beginning 1738, Drayton hall is considered one of the best examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in the United States. I believe the official website is one of the best comprehensive examples of a web site dedicated to Southern history.
I was so impressed with Drayton Hall, its grounds and the mission of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, I became a member on my first visit. My husband and I enjoy walking the grounds and sitting by the Ashley river. I am looking forward to taking in a Tech Tour, and getting involved in preservation and excavation efforts in the future. A subscription to Preservation Magazine and a Charleston Rice Spoon come with the membership.
Notes:
In keeping with the period there is no air conditioning in Drayton Hall, so visiting in the hot humid months isn’t for the faint of heart.
Dogs: Allowed on-leash on the grounds but not in buildings.
